Avitus Group Review 2026

Montana-founded business services firm bundling PEO co-employment with accounting, recruiting, marketing and managed IT

Founded: 1996·Best for: 10 to 150 employees (sweet spot: 15 to 75)·Quote-only, monthly or per-project depending on the services selected

Our take

Avitus Group is worth a look for small employers in Montana and the Rocky Mountain West who want one vendor for payroll, HR and the parts of the back office most PEOs do not touch, including accounting, recruiting and IT. That bundling is a real differentiator for an owner with no internal administrative team, and the firm has been independently held since 1996 rather than passed between sponsors. What we flag is the credential stack: no IRS CPEO certification and no ESAC accreditation, which means neither the federal tax-liability shift nor bonded financial assurance is on the table. We also push for hard numbers on worksite employees and master medical participation before signing, because the company publishes almost nothing about its own scale.

What Avitus Group does well

  • One of the few PEOs headquartered in Montana, with genuine Rocky Mountain market knowledge
  • Unusually broad service menu: co-employment plus accounting, tax prep, recruiting, branding and managed IT under one contract
  • Independently held since 1996, so no private equity roll-up churn in the service model
  • Services can be bought a la carte or bundled, so a client can start with payroll and add co-employment later
  • Has grown by acquisition into adjacent lines such as IT consulting, which deepens the non-HR side of the offering

Watch-outs and limitations

  • Not on the IRS CPEO list, so no federal sole-liability payroll tax shift
  • Not ESAC accredited, so no bonded financial assurance behind client obligations
  • Publishes very little about its own scale: no staff count, client count or worksite employee total
  • Breadth across accounting, IT and marketing means the PEO line is one of several priorities rather than the sole focus
  • No published pricing; everything is quoted per client
